October Mentor Check-In Prompts
October can be an especially demanding season for new teachers as exhaustion sets in and confidence begins to waver. The October Mentor Check-In Prompts revisits our previous Coaching Conversation resource and offers purposeful check-in questions organized around four coaching styles: directive, facilitative, collaborative, and transformational. Use these questions to move beyond “How are things going?” and help student teachers and early career educators identify their needs, reflect on their experiences, problem-solve challenges, and reframe the stories they may be telling themselves about their teaching.

With sections for school and administrative information, curriculum and instruction, family communication, and grade-level team resources, it can help reduce confusion and give early career teachers more independence when navigating the day-to-day systems of a school. Add, remove, or rename items based on your team’s needs, and keep the document updated throughout the year as a shared go-to resource.

Starting Strong - A Wellness Resource
Mentor teachers give significant time, energy, and care to supporting others, often while continuing to carry the full responsibilities of their own classrooms and school communities. This video introduces the Starting Strong resource, a brief wellness reflection designed to help mentors pause, assess how they are doing, and identify where additional support or stronger boundaries may be needed.
The resource guides mentors through five interconnected areas of wellness—emotional, mental, spiritual, physical, and financial—and encourages them to choose one realistic area of focus for the school year. Rather than creating an ambitious plan, the goal is to build awareness and identify small, sustainable steps that will help mentors remain grounded as they support others.
